Envisioning Experience at UPA 2011

Stephanie Sansoucie June 29, 2011

This year, I embraced the opportunity to present a one-hour session entitled “Envisioning Experience” at the Usability Professionals’ Association (UPA) International Conference 2011 in Atlanta with fellow UPA Presenter Maggie Reilly.  During this session, we explored the process of visualization for user experience including a survey of tools for visualization and when to use them.

So, what is visualization exactly?

We leverage visualization to “see” a potential solution before we spend the time and money to implement it.  We do this in the real world all of the time.  For example, a car manufacturer wouldn’t build a car without an engineering blueprint just as a construction company wouldn’t build a house without a solid set of floor plans.  We find that the value and benefits of visualization extend well beyond the real world and into the digital space.  Examples of visualization for the digital world include artifacts such as information architecture diagrams, storyboards, wireframes and digital prototypes.

How can visualization benefit my company?

Our approach to visualization brings people together by facilitating agreement among stakeholders while easing communication efforts through information clarification.  When visualization tells a story, requirements are transformed into an immediate and sharable experience.  From initial sketches to detailed information design, visualization uses dynamic imagery to communicate both concepts and requirements.  When employed effectively, visualization reduces risk and development time while supporting effective cross-functional communication by helping team members to identify gaps, work through problems and build a solution that satisfies both business and user needs.
